Most small SaaS teams look for an Intercom alternative for one reason: the bill. Intercom charges per seat and then $0.99 for every outcome its Fin AI agent delivers, so the cost climbs with both your team and your success. The good news is that the alternatives have caught up. Several now include an AI agent, a help centre and live chat for a fraction of the price.
Below are six Intercom alternatives for teams under 25 people, what each costs for a team of three, and what you give up when you switch. Prices are from each company’s own pricing page.
Why teams leave Intercom
Intercom is very good software. It covers more channels than almost anyone, including WhatsApp, SMS and phone, and its higher plans add workflows, SLAs, HIPAA support and multibrand help centres. If you need all of that, stay.
For a small team, the maths is the problem. Essential is $29 a seat a month billed monthly, or $19 billed yearly. Fin costs $0.99 per outcome on top. Copilot, the AI helper for your own agents, is extra again. Three people on Essential pay $87 a month before a single AI answer. If Fin resolves 300 conversations, that’s another $297.
What three seats cost a month
| Tool | 3 people, a month | AI on top |
|---|---|---|
| Intercom (Essential) | $87 ($57 billed yearly) | $0.99 per Fin outcome |
| Rectify (Build) | $29 | Your own AI key at cost |
| Crisp (Mini) | $45, for up to 4 seats | $5 of AI credits included |
| Freshdesk (Growth) | $57, billed yearly | 500 AI sessions included |
| Help Scout (Standard) | $75 | $0.75 per AI resolution |
| Featurebase (Growth) | $111 ($87 billed yearly) | $0.49 per AI resolution |
Seat prices only. Each tool has higher plans, and most offer a discount for paying yearly.
1. Rectify: support plus the rest of the job
Rectify replaces Intercom’s inbox and help centre, then keeps going. Quanta, its AI teammate, answers first from your help centre and docs, hands anything tricky to your team with the customer’s history attached, and works across feedback, the roadmap, changelog, session replay and uptime monitoring in the same workspace.
Pricing is per plan, not per seat: $29 a month covers three people, $59 covers ten, $99 covers 25. AI runs on your own key from Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek or OpenRouter, at the provider’s price, so there’s no fee per answer.
Pick it if you want one place for support and everything around it, and you’d rather not pay per AI answer. The full side by side is on Rectify vs Intercom.
2. Crisp: flat price for the whole team
Crisp charges per workspace, so adding a teammate doesn’t change the bill until you outgrow the plan. Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats with a shared email inbox and $5 of AI credits. The knowledge base and AI chatbot start on Essentials at $95 a month for 10 seats.
Pick it if live chat is your main channel and you want predictable pricing. More in Rectify vs Crisp.
3. Help Scout: the calm email inbox
Help Scout feels like email, which is exactly why people love it. There’s a free plan for up to 5 users and 100 contacts a month. Standard is $25 a user a month and adds live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, with a monthly cap you set.
Pick it if most of your support arrives by email and you want the simplest possible switch.
4. Freshdesk: tickets at a low seat price
Freshdesk’s Growth plan is $19 an agent a month billed yearly, and includes the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions. Extra sessions are $49 per 100. Pro ($55) and Enterprise ($89) add more automation, and Freddy Copilot for agents is $29 a month each.
Pick it if you think in tickets, queues and SLAs.
5. Featurebase: feedback and support together
Featurebase pairs a helpdesk with feedback boards, a roadmap and a changelog. Growth is $37 a seat a month, or $29 billed yearly, and its Fibi AI agent costs $0.49 per resolution.
Pick it if feature requests and support questions arrive mixed together. Compared in Rectify vs Featurebase.
6. Zendesk: when support becomes a department
Zendesk is the move for teams that are growing a support function, not shrinking a bill. Every Suite plan includes AI agents, with 5 automated resolutions per agent a month on Suite Team and 10 on Professional, then $2.00 each pay as you go. Prices are per agent and shown in your local currency.
Pick it if you need routing, SLAs and several help centres for a team that’s getting bigger.
What you’ll miss when you leave Intercom
Be honest with yourself about these before you move:
- Channels. If customers reach you on WhatsApp, SMS or phone, check the alternative supports them. Help Scout lists several; most others focus on chat and email.
- Outbound messaging. Intercom’s product tours, checklists, posts and surveys sit in an add-on. If you use them, plan their replacement. Rectify has in-app popups and surveys; others may not.
- Reporting. Intercom’s reports are deep. Most small teams use a fraction of them, but check the ones you do use.
How to switch without losing a conversation
- Export your help centre first. Your articles are what the new AI agent will answer from, so move them before anything else. Rectify imports existing docs in minutes.
- Run both for a week. Put the new widget on a few pages while Intercom stays live, and see what the new AI answers well and where it hands over.
- Move the widget. Swap the script tag across your product, and keep the old inbox open until its last conversations close.
- Check your integrations. Slack alerts, your issue tracker and your CRM. Make sure the new tool talks to the same places.
- Tell customers nothing. If the switch is done well, they’ll only notice faster answers.
Questions founders ask
What is the cheapest Intercom alternative?
For a team of three with an AI agent included, Rectify ($29 a month, AI at your provider’s cost) and Crisp ($45 a month for up to 4 seats, with $5 of AI credits) are the lowest prices on this list. Help Scout has a free plan for up to 5 users and 100 contacts a month.
Is there an Intercom alternative with an AI agent like Fin?
Yes. Rectify has Quanta, Help Scout has AI Answers, Crisp has Hugo, Freshdesk has Freddy AI Agent, Featurebase has Fibi and Zendesk includes AI agents in every Suite plan. They differ mostly in how they charge for it.
Can I keep my help centre when I switch?
Yes. Export your articles from Intercom and import them into the new tool. Do this first, because the AI agent answers from them.
Prices and features are taken from each company’s own pricing page: Intercom, Rectify, Crisp, Help Scout, Freshdesk, Featurebase and Zendesk. Prices change, so check theirs before you decide.
The short answer
If Intercom’s pricing is the only problem, any tool above will save you money. If the real problem is that support is one of ten jobs on your plate, hire Rectify free and let Quanta run support alongside the rest.
