6 Help Scout Alternatives for Small SaaS Teams

Six Help Scout alternatives for small SaaS teams, from email-first inboxes to an AI teammate that runs support, feedback and uptime together.

Help Scout is a lovely shared inbox. It feels like email, it stays out of your way, and its Docs knowledge base comes included. So why look elsewhere? Usually because a SaaS outgrows email-shaped support. Questions start arriving inside the product, bug reports need a replay to make sense, and the founder wants the AI to do more than draft a reply.

Here are six Help Scout alternatives for small SaaS teams, and the specific reason you’d pick each one. Prices are from each company’s own pricing page.

First, what Help Scout costs

Help Scout has a free plan for up to 5 users and 100 contacts a month. Standard is $25 a user a month and Plus is $45. AI Answers, its AI agent, costs $0.75 per resolution, while AI Assist, AI Drafts and AI Summarize are included. Standard adds live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger alongside email.

That’s fair pricing. The reasons to move are usually about what Help Scout doesn’t try to do.

1. Rectify: when support is tangled up with everything else

In a small SaaS, a support conversation is rarely just support. “The export button does nothing” is a bug. “Can it do X?” is a feature request. “Is it down?” is an uptime question. Rectify keeps all of it in one workspace, run by an AI teammate called Quanta.

Quanta answers first in a shared live-chat inbox, from your help centre and docs, with its sources. When it can’t help, it hands over with the customer’s history, feedback and activity beside the chat. Bug reports arrive with a session replay and logs; requests land on a public roadmap; the changelog tells everyone who asked when it ships. There’s a help centre that drafts the articles you’re missing, too.

Price: a free Idea plan, then $29 a month for 3 seats, $59 for 10 and $99 for 25. AI runs on your own key at the provider’s cost, so there’s no fee per answer.

2. Front: when email is the job

Front is the closest thing to Help Scout’s spirit, built for teams who handle a lot of shared email and want to collaborate on it. Starter is $25 a seat a month billed yearly for up to 10 seats; Professional is $65 for up to 50. Its Autopilot AI starts at $0.05 a conversation, and Copilot is $20 a seat a month on Starter and Professional.

Pick it if your customers write long emails and you want the best tools for working through them together.

3. Intercom: when you want every channel

Intercom covers more ground than Help Scout: in-product messaging, WhatsApp, SMS and phone (pay as you go), and an AI agent, Fin, at $0.99 per outcome. Essential is $29 a seat a month, or $19 billed yearly.

Pick it if you need channels and product messaging that Help Scout doesn’t offer, and the budget fits. Our Intercom alternatives guide covers the trade-offs.

4. Crisp: when chat comes first

Crisp is chat-first and priced per workspace. Mini is $45 a month for 4 seats. The knowledge base and AI chatbot start on Essentials at $95 for 10 seats, with $25 of AI credits a month.

Pick it if most conversations start in your chat widget and you want to add teammates without adding cost.

5. Freshdesk: when you need structure

Freshdesk gives you proper ticketing: queues, SLAs and automations. Growth is $19 an agent a month billed yearly and includes 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions; extra sessions are $49 per 100.

Pick it if your support is growing and you need process more than personality.

6. Zendesk: when support becomes a department

Zendesk is built for teams with managers, routing and many help centres. Every Suite plan includes AI agents, with 5 to 10 automated resolutions per agent a month, then $2.00 each pay as you go.

Pick it if you’re hiring support people, not trying to avoid it.

How to decide

Ask one question: what does a support conversation turn into at your company?

  • If it turns into another email, stay with Help Scout or move to Front.
  • If it turns into a ticket in a queue, Freshdesk or Zendesk.
  • If it turns into a bug, a feature request or an incident, you want those in the same place as the conversation. That’s what Rectify is for.

Questions founders ask

Is there a free Help Scout alternative?

Rectify’s Idea plan is free for good, with a support inbox (10 replies), roadmap, changelog, status page and an uptime monitor. Crisp is free for 2 seats. Help Scout’s own free plan covers 5 users and 100 contacts a month.

Which Help Scout alternative has the best AI agent?

They all answer from your knowledge base now. The bigger differences are cost and reach: per-resolution fees range from $0.49 to $2.00 across the main tools, and only some let the AI act beyond the inbox. Rectify’s Quanta runs on your own key and can also triage bugs, update the roadmap and draft the changelog, with your approval.

Prices and features are taken from each company’s own pricing page: Help Scout, Rectify, Front, Intercom, Crisp, Freshdesk and Zendesk. Prices change, so check theirs before you decide.
