8 AI Customer Support Tools for Small SaaS Teams

Eight AI customer support tools for small SaaS teams compared: how each prices its AI agent, what it costs and who it suits best.

If you run a small SaaS, the right AI customer support tool answers the easy questions on its own, hands the hard ones to a person with the full story attached, and doesn’t bill you a surprise every time it helps. For most teams under 25 people, the choice comes down to how the AI is priced and what else sits next to the inbox.

Here are eight that small SaaS teams actually use, what each one charges for its AI, and who each one suits. Every price below comes from the company’s own pricing page.

The short version

  • Rectify if you want support, feedback, a roadmap, uptime and bug replays in one place, with AI on your own key and no fee per answer.
  • Intercom if you need WhatsApp, SMS and phone support, and the budget for per-seat pricing plus a fee per AI outcome.
  • Help Scout if email is your main channel and you want a calm, simple shared inbox.
  • Crisp if you want live chat across channels on one flat workspace price.
  • Zendesk if you’re heading towards a bigger support team with routing, SLAs and many help centres.
  • Freshdesk if you want classic ticketing at a low price per agent.
  • Tidio if you sell to consumers and want a chatbot on a small monthly budget.
  • Featurebase if feedback boards and a roadmap matter as much as the inbox.

What to look for in an AI support tool

Every tool on this list now has an AI agent. The differences are in four places, and they matter more than the feature grid.

How the AI is priced

There are three models. Some charge per resolution or outcome, so your bill grows as the AI does more work. Some charge per seat for an AI add-on. And some let you bring your own AI key, so you pay the model provider directly at cost. Per-resolution pricing looks small on day one. At a few hundred conversations a month, it is often the biggest line on the invoice.

Where the answers come from

An AI agent is only as good as what it reads. Look for one that answers from your help centre and docs, shows its sources, and tells you which questions it couldn’t answer, so you know what to write next.

The handover

The moment the AI hands a customer to a person decides whether they stay calm or leave annoyed. The best tools pass the whole conversation, the customer’s history and what they were doing in your product, so nobody has to ask them to repeat themselves.

What sits next to the inbox

For a small SaaS, support questions are often bug reports, feature requests or “is it down?” in disguise. A tool that keeps feedback, replays and your status page next to the inbox saves a lot of copying and pasting between tabs.

1. Rectify

Rectify is the ops hire for small SaaS teams. Its AI teammate, Quanta, answers first in a shared live-chat inbox, using your help centre and knowledge base, with links to its sources. When it can’t help, it brings in your team and alerts you by push and email. You choose the mode: Quanta first with handover, Quanta only, or your team only.

The difference is what’s around the inbox. Beside every chat you see the customer’s profile, earlier conversations and feedback. Bug reports arrive with a session replay and logs, and the same workspace runs your roadmap, changelog, help centre and uptime monitoring. Quanta works across all of it, so “a customer says checkout is broken” can become a triaged bug and a draft fix without leaving the conversation.

AI pricing: runs on your own key from Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek or OpenRouter, paid to the provider at cost. No fee per answer.
Price: a free Idea plan, then Build at $29 a month for 3 seats, Launch $59 for 10, Accelerate $99 for 25. Per plan, not per seat.
Best for: founders and teams up to 25 who would rather have one AI teammate running support, feedback and uptime than five tools.

2. Intercom

Intercom is the best-known name here. Its Fin AI agent answers across chat and email, and Intercom covers more channels than anyone else on this list: WhatsApp, SMS and phone are available pay as you go. Advanced and Expert plans add workflows, multiple team inboxes, SLAs, HIPAA support and multibrand help centres.

AI pricing: $0.99 per Fin outcome on every plan. Copilot, the assistant for your agents, is extra.
Price: Essential is $29 a seat a month, or $19 billed yearly. Advanced is $99 a seat a month, Expert $139.
Best for: support teams that need many channels and can budget for seats plus outcomes. A three-person team on Essential pays $87 a month before Fin.

3. Help Scout

Help Scout has long been the favourite of teams that want a shared inbox that feels like email, not a ticketing system. Its Docs knowledge base comes with it, and the Standard plan adds live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

AI pricing: AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, with a monthly spending cap you set. AI Assist, AI Drafts and AI Summarize are included on every plan.
Price: a free plan for up to 5 users and 100 contacts a month, then Standard at $25 a user a month and Plus at $45.
Best for: email-first teams who want something simple and well made.

4. Crisp

Crisp prices per workspace, not per seat, which is unusual and helpful for small teams. Its Hugo AI agent answers from your knowledge base, and higher plans add an omnichannel inbox, workflows and routing.

AI pricing: AI credits are included by plan: $5 a month on Mini, $25 on Essentials, $75 on Plus.
Price: free for 2 seats, then Mini at $45 a month for 4 seats. The knowledge base and AI chatbot start on Essentials, at $95 a month for 10 seats.
Best for: chat-heavy teams that want one flat price as they add people.

5. Zendesk

Zendesk is built for support teams that are growing into a department. Every Suite plan now includes AI agents for messaging, email and voice, with an AI agent builder and support for more than 80 languages.

AI pricing: Suite Team includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month and Suite Professional 10. After that, pay-as-you-go resolutions are $2.00 each. Copilot is an add-on on Professional and up.
Price: per agent, and shown in your local currency on Zendesk’s site.
Best for: teams that need skills-based routing, many help centres and the reporting a larger support team expects. For a founder answering their own inbox, it’s a lot of machinery.

6. Freshdesk

Freshdesk is classic ticketing at a friendly price. Its Freddy AI Agent is priced by session: a 72-hour window from the customer’s first message, counted once however many replies it sends.

AI pricing: the first 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions are included, then $49 for each extra 100. Freddy AI Copilot is $29 an agent a month on Pro and Enterprise.
Price: Growth is $19 an agent a month billed yearly, Pro $55, Enterprise $89.
Best for: teams that think in tickets and SLAs and want to keep the price per agent low.

7. Tidio

Tidio is popular with online shops: a friendly chat widget, chatbot flows and the Lyro AI agent. It works for SaaS too, especially if your customers are consumers rather than businesses.

AI pricing: Lyro is included in limited amounts by plan, or as an add-on from $32.50 a month for 50 Lyro conversations.
Price: a free plan with 50 conversations, then Starter from $24.17 a month and Growth from $49.17.
Best for: small teams on a tight budget with a high volume of simple questions.

8. Featurebase

Featurebase started with feedback boards and a roadmap, and now includes a helpdesk with live chat, email and an AI agent called Fibi. If collecting feature requests matters as much as answering questions, it keeps both in one place.

AI pricing: $0.49 per AI resolution, charged once per conversation.
Price: free for 1 seat without AI, then Growth at $37 a seat a month, or $29 billed yearly.
Best for: product teams who want feedback, a roadmap and support together. We compared it in detail on Rectify vs Featurebase.

How to choose

Start with the shape of your support, not the feature list.

  • You’re a founder answering your own inbox. Pick something that answers first and runs the rest of the job too, so support doesn’t become one more tab. Rectify, Crisp or Help Scout’s free plan.
  • Your customers use WhatsApp, SMS or phone. Intercom or Help Scout, which list those channels. If Intercom’s price is the sticking point, see our Intercom alternatives; if you’re leaving an email-first inbox, our Help Scout alternatives.
  • You expect a lot of AI answers. Do the maths on per-resolution pricing at your real volume. At 1,000 resolved conversations a month, $0.49 to $2.00 each adds $490 to $2,000 to the bill. A bring-your-own-key model costs whatever the tokens cost.
  • You’re building a support team with managers and SLAs. Zendesk or Freshdesk.
  • Feedback and support blur together. Rectify or Featurebase, so a question that’s really a feature request lands on the roadmap, not in a spreadsheet.

Questions founders ask

Can an AI agent really handle support for a SaaS?

It can handle the repeat questions: how to reset a password, where an invoice lives, whether a feature exists. That’s often most of the volume. What it should never do is guess. Pick one that answers only from your own content, shows its sources and hands over the moment it isn’t sure.

What does AI customer support cost for a small team?

Seats plus AI. Per-resolution pricing ranges from $0.49 to $2.00 per answer across the tools above, on top of seat prices. Rectify’s Build plan is $29 a month for three seats, with AI paid to your own provider at cost.

Should the AI answer customers on its own?

For questions your docs already answer, yes, and customers get the reply in seconds instead of hours. For anything that touches billing, data or a bug, the AI should hand over with the context attached. Most tools here let you choose; in Rectify it’s one setting.

Prices and features are taken from each company’s own pricing page: Rectify, Intercom, Help Scout, Crisp, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Tidio and Featurebase. Prices change, so check theirs before you decide.
